Criteria for Specially Cultivated Rice
Specially grown rice is rice grown in accordance with the "Labeling Guidelines for Specially Grown Agricultural Products" established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. These guidelines were enacted in response to growing consumer interest in agricultural products grown without the use of pesticides and with reduced use of pesticides.
The standard for specially grown rice is that the rice must be grown with less than 50% of the number of pesticides and less than 50% of the nitrogen content of chemical fertilizers used in the region where the rice is grown, compared to the customary levels (use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers to be reduced as is customary in each region).
